return to United States index

The first patented version of the McAneny cigar lighter mechanism was invented in 1910. The patent for the second iteration was applied for in 1912 and assigned to the Handilite Manufacturing Company of St.Louis. McAneny designed the third version in 1914. Also assigned to Handilite, this is the patented mechanism design used by both Handilite models shown here. It is one of the earliest full automatic ferrocerium lighter designs, predating The Ronson Lighter by more than ten years.

Excepting its patent information, Handilite lighters are largely undocumented. The names used are meant to assist with identification, they were not assigned by the manufacturer. The Handilite lighter & ashtray largely matches McAneny's 1914 patent drawing. The counter lighter variation uses the same base mechanism design with a couple of unique facets that suggest it was intended for commercial use. Thsi variation towers above the sizable lighter & ashtray, its base is weighted, and is most comfortably used while standing. It also features a vented metal disc that shields the mechanics of the pistol-grip mechanism from soot, embers and cigar ash.

In January of 1916, the "United States Tobacco Journal" reports Handilite filed for bankruptcy, citing stockholder apathy. It is likely the company went out-of-business before McAneny's patent application was officially accepted in 1917. (EB)
