Rochester, Kent (GBR)

return to British index

Produced after World War 2, The Charles was manufactured at Frindsbury Works in Kent by Mechanical Patents Ltd. It's roller-type mechanism features a unique flint mechanism patented in 1947. The revolving flint mechanism is actuated when the roller is turned, rotating the flint while it is pressed against the spinning file wheel. This both creates a show of sparks and ensures that flints wear down evenly. (EB)
